Biodiversity Conservation
9 December 2016, CBD COP13, Cancun Mexico -There are 20 Aichi Targets in all, endorsed at the tenth Conference of the Parties to the CBD in Nagoya, Japan in 2010. They help to meet five different strategic goals which aim to reduce the loss of biodiversity by the year 2020. Each day during the CBD COP13 we'll be sharing one of the Targets with you and examples of how the Pacific islands are meeting these. – #PacificProtectedAreas
Strategic Goal B: Reduce the direct pressures on biodiversity and promote sustainable use
Target 7: By 2020 areas under agriculture, aquaculture and forestry are managed sustainably, ensuring conservation of biodiversity.
"Solomon Islands government through its relevant sectoral agencies has initiated steps or measures consistent with Target 7. The Ministry of Forest has already taken steps to cancel the timber felling licenses granted to many logging companies operating in Solomon Islands. The pressures exerted on the country's forest resource and the need to ensure the sustainability of the industry underlie this policy approach. In the agriculture sector, the responsible ministry has revived the 'land use planning section', with the responsibility in ensuring major agricultural developments are restricted only to areas deemed suitable.
